The chapel was named in honor of Our Lady of the Angels of the Portiuncula, located outside of Assisi. Because of his special love for the Blessed Virgin,
St. Francis was especially fond of that chapel. It was there that he started the Franciscan movement and ended his earthly sojourn. According to tradition, Francis obtained for that chapel the famous Portiuncula indulgence,
which the Church confirmed and extended to our Queen of Angels Chapel.
This Feast of Pardon, the Portiuncula, is celebrated on August 2.
